The Beechwood Community and Education Center is located at the Fanshawe Conservation Area in London Ontario. It encompasses a lot of different kinds of spaces. One half of the building is a performing arts theater that seats around 500 people while the other half is a community space a teaching area. The main floor of the community center is public space that is open to anyone while the second floor is collaboration space and classroom spaces.
A lot of thought was put into the design of these spaces. There is ample glazing along the perimeter of the building to bring natural light into these spaces. Within the classrooms there are windows on the interior wall as well to allow this daylighting to completely penetrate the interior of the building. The material and finish selection in these areas combine a natural feel with lots of wood textures with bright colours and patterns to create an energizing and inspiring space for learning. The furniture in these spaces and throughout the community center overall is completely flexible and can be reconfigured to support different types of group work and learning. Another important aspect to this space is wayfinding. In a space with different users all the time, wayfinding needs to be clear to ensure that individuals or classes that are vising the space are able to find where they're going easily. Instead of using room names, different types of leaves where chosen as identifiers for the different classrooms. Large decals of these leaves are visible from the entrance and displayed on the interior classrooms windows they relate to.
All renderings were created using Revit and supplemented using Adobe Photoshop.
